Demetria Lucas D'Oyley at Sandy Bay, Cape Town, South Africa.

In February 2012, I posted a photo (seen above) from Cape Town, South Africa on my Instagram. I was barefoot, standing on high rocks that extended out into the ocean to take a  photo of Sandy Bay, one of the prettiest beaches I've seen. The sun was setting beyond a cliff, the sky was shades of pink and the water was still, serene, a perfect blue. I was in awe. I whimsically captioned the photo, #seesomeworld.

Since that first photo, #seesomeworld has grown from a personal way for me to organize the images of my travels on social media to a mantra for other like-minded explorers who also take off to discover the unknown. Thousands of travelers are using the hashtag to document their journeys at home and abroad,  connect with other adventurers and plan their next adventure. Even Essence Magazine credits the hashtag as the inspiration for its July 2015 global issue featuring Erykah Badu in Nairobi, Kenya.

The phrase “see some world” is figurative and literal. It’s a philosophy on how to live, an encouragement to try something new and to get out of your comfort zone. And yes, it’s a call to action to actually get up and go see someplace you haven’t before, whether it’s in Mississippi or Malaysia. See the world across the ocean, and in your own backyard. You might be surprised at what you learn, about yourself and others, in both.

At seesomeworld.com, I’ll write and occasionally vlog about where I’ve been and want to go, what I’ve learned and how I’ve been changed (and am changing) along the way.  But if you’re here for the pictures,  the recommendations of where to go, and the occasional salacious story, that’s cool too. ;-0
